  1. Program note. The Appalachian three-stringed Dulcimer and Bluegrass gospel hymn Angel Band was first arranged by William Batchelder Bradbury in , and may be found paired with Jefferson Haskell's lyric Oh, Come, Angel Band in Bradbury's Golden Shower (). It has been reinterpreted by artists as diverse as Jerry Garcia and Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash and Anonymous 4.
  2. The final Piano Trio No. 4, "Angel Band," however, is gorgeous, and its programmatic use of the hymn material to depict stages in the life of the work's dedicatee, Kentucky-born violinist Joyce Ritchie Strosahl, is clearly audible. The Finisterra Trio, of international origins and based in Washington state, does well with Hagen 's lush idiom.7/
  3. The four piano trios on this release come from two distinct phases of Daron Hagen's career, neatly forming bookends to his creative output. The first two, written in 19respectively, are works by a young composer in his twenties just finding his way.5/5(3).

  6. HAGEN, D.A.: Piano Trios Nos. (Finisterra Piano Trio) ‘To say that Daron Hagen is a remarkable musician,’ wrote Ned Rorem in Opera News, ‘is to underrate him. Daron is music.’ Each of Hagen’s piano trios has a particular significance.

  8. Piano Trio No. 4, “Angel Band” (), is also based on a hymn. The second movement begins with a violin solo with an underpinning of piano and cello morphing into a waltz on piano against harmonics on violin. The resulting haunting, ghostlike waltz with an expansive theme played on the violin proves shimmering and profound.
  9. The Finisterra trio delivers a confident and well balanced performance. The “Trio Concertant” is much more academic, composed while Hagen was a student of David Diamond.
